"Santelmo" Ball of Fire

The "Santelmo" or the St. Elmo's Fire is one of the many Mythical Creatures to be seen or heard from stories of elders here in the Philippines, it looks like a skull on fire, a size of a billiard ball that when he spots you, you’re going to have the fastest run of your life.

The story begins with a man drowning in a river fronting a crowd with no one tried to help him as the water is too deep, authorities are sure that the man died, but his body was never found, weeks after the incident people saw the water glow in red, they look to see if there were boats lurking the river, but they never saw one boat floating, instead they saw a matter that look more like a fireball floating in the middle of the river; in shock they ran for their lives, and told more and more people about what they saw in the river. They all believed that the fireball, originated from the man that died from drowning in the river.

Filipinos believe that when a man dies while the rain pours, his spirit will stay where the body has been found and eventually his spirit will turn into the so called “Santelmo”. The reason why, when there is a corpse found along the streets Filipinos would light a candle to release the spirit from its captivity from the real world.

  1. Here in the South of Mindanao, not all Filipinos believe in santelmo, and of those who do, many believe that it is just a dried up human blood that spilled on the soil which contain some amounts of elements (like phosphorus) that react during thunderstorms causing it to glow and move with the gusts of wind, sometimes caused by a sudden quick movement of people running away. People light gas lamps before a wooden cross stuck on the ground where a corpse has been found simply to warn people of danger - like slippery road or blind junctions which are accident prone.

  2. The wooden cross is placed to remind people that someone has died on the spot. Catholics passing by take a moment to pray for the departed. NOn Catholics just take the warning to drive safely.

  3. In my opinion, santelmo is not a mythical creature but a misunderstood technology. It could be something out of this world. I believe santelmo is a spaceship or a UFO.
